A screw conveyor is a piece of mechanical equipment that utilizes a motor to drive the rotation of a screw, thereby advancing material to achieve transport. Widely used in industries such as construction materials, chemicals, electric power, metallurgy, coal, grain, food processing, and waste treatment, it serves as indispensable core equipment in the field of bulk material handling.

What is the working principle of a screw conveyor?

The working principle of a screw conveyor is straightforward: rotating helical flights convey material by pushing it along the interior of a stationary casing. As the screw shaft rotates, the material is subjected to the normal thrust of the helical flights; while the radial component of this force and the friction between the flights and the material tend to cause the material to rotate with the shaft, the material's own weight and the frictional resistance from the casing counteract this tendency. Consequently, the material moves axially along the casing, driven by the axial component of the normal thrust exerted by the flights.

To visualize this, the screw assembly acts like a threaded rod and the material like a nut: as the screw assembly rotates continuously, the material is continuously conveyed forward.

What are the application areas for screw conveyors?

Screw conveyors have an extremely wide range of applications:

Construction materials industry: Conveying powdered materials such as cement, fly ash, and lime

Chemical industry: Conveying various chemical powders and granular raw materials

Electric power industry: Conveying coal ash, slag, etc.

Metallurgical industry: Conveying mineral powder, concentrates, etc.

Coal industry: Conveying coal, pulverized coal, etc.

Grain and food processing: Conveying grains, flour, animal feed, etc.

Environmental protection and waste treatment: Conveying sludge, biomass, refuse, etc.

In addition, new applications are expanding into sectors such as electric power, coatings, coking, and new materials.

What are the advantages of screw conveyors?

Screw conveyors offer the following significant advantages:

Simple structure, compact cross-sectional dimensions, and low manufacturing costs

Good sealing performance, minimal environmental pollution, and improved working conditions

Flexible layout, allowing for multiple intermediate loading and unloading points

Safe and convenient operation, with easy maintenance

Reversible conveying direction, or simultaneous conveying in opposite directions

Materials can be agitated during transport, enabling processes such as mixing, stirring, or cooling

As fundamental equipment in the field of bulk material handling, screw conveyors play an irreplaceable role across numerous industrial sectors, thanks to advantages such as simple construction, excellent sealing performance, and flexible layout capabilities.
